About Hollywood Stocker +
🎬 What is Hollywood Stocker?
Hollywood Stocker is a stock market simulation game that treats Hollywood actors as tradable assets. I invest in actor's careers by purchasing "shares" based on their StarScore - a calculated metric representing an actor's current market value and career momentum.
It's like fantasy sports meets the stock market for the entertainment industry. I'm betting on which actors will have breakout roles, which ones are hot new names, and which ones I believe are the next big things.
It's inspired by the old Hollywood Stock Exchange, but I wanted to build my own clean system.
🧮 How StarScore is Calculated
The StarScore combines multiple data sources with weighted importance:
Data Sources & Weights
- Wikipedia Page Views (60%) - Daily page view count
- Measures public interest and curiosity
- Spikes during major announcements or controversies
- TMDb Popularity Score (25%) - Movie database popularity rating
- Based on current film/TV project buzz
- Updates daily with new releases and trending content
- Acting Credits Count (15%) - Total number of professional roles
- Represents career longevity and experience
- More stable metric that changes slowly
The Formula
StarScore = (Wikipedia/1000 × 0.60) + (TMDb/10 × 0.25) + (Credits/10 × 0.15)
Example: An actor with TMDb 85, Wikipedia 50,000 views, and 45 credits would have:
- StarScore = (50,000/1000 × 0.60) + (85/10 × 0.25) + (45/10 × 0.15)
- StarScore = (50 × 0.60) + (8.5 × 0.25) + (4.5 × 0.15)
- StarScore = 30 + 2.125 + 0.675 = 32.8
📈 Market Shifts - How the "Market" Works
Just like real stock markets, Hollywood Stocker experiences market-wide movements where all actors can rise or fall together. This creates realistic market dynamics that mirror actual financial markets.
What Causes Market-Wide Declines?
When you see everyone in your portfolio down on the same day, it's usually because:
- 30-Day Rolling Window: Wikipedia views use a 30-day rolling total, so when a high-traffic day from 31 days ago drops out of the calculation, everyone loses those views
- Entertainment News Cycles: When entertainment news shifts focus away from celebrity culture, Wikipedia page views drop across the board
- Seasonal Patterns: Holiday periods, summer breaks, or major news events can create synchronized drops in celebrity interest
- TMDb Algorithm Updates: Changes to TMDb's popularity scoring can affect multiple actors simultaneously
Market Corrections & Bull Markets
Your portfolio experiences realistic market cycles:
- Market Corrections: When high-traffic periods roll out of the 30-day window, creating temporary declines
- Bull Markets: When entertainment news is hot and Wikipedia views spike across multiple actors
- Sector Movements: Different types of actors (blockbuster stars vs. indie actors) can move together based on industry trends
Why This Makes Sense
This system accurately simulates real financial markets where:
- External factors affect entire sectors (just like economic news affects stock markets)
- Correlated movements happen when underlying data sources change together
- Market sentiment drives broad movements beyond individual company performance
So when you see a "red day" where everyone's down, it's not a bug—it's the market working exactly as it should, reflecting real-world celebrity popularity trends and creating authentic trading dynamics.

🎬 So That's The Game I've Built
Hollywood Stocker combines my joy of buying and trading assets and celebrity worship. I started this project in June 2025 and six versions later, I've built not only a robust and reliable system, but a fun and engaging game that play throughout the day.
